BlogSense is an automation software solution for self hosted WordPress blogs. One of the appeals of using BlogSense is the ability to remote publish to web2.0 sites like blogger.com, which can affectively help boost your rankings and increase your overall traffic exposure.

BlogSpot, aka Google’s Blogger, does not accept XML/RPC remote publishing, but it does accept email-to-publishing, which is a feature that BlogSense provides for each user created campaign.

C# – Wait function.

Hey Guys,

You may notice that I’m posting more tutorials. I’ve decided to expand out my responsibilities a little bit. Most of you this wont apply to but possibly it will help a few on the internet.

I am developing a new software in c# and I’m learning a lot. One thing I learned recently is that Thread.Sleep() pauses the javascript loading of my browser within my program. Well I need to pause the program logic, but not pause any internal processing. For this reason I’ve written a function to help pause the program logic. It could be considered a wait() instead of a sleep().

BlogSense Tips – Using Youtube Shortcode to Generate Video ID

Sometimes we need to capture the youtube video id so we can embed it into a theme shortcode, or custom video player like JW Player . Here is a trick to use BlogSense’s video generation shortcode to return the video id rather then the object embed code.

Go to Automation->Core Templates->Post Template: Youtube Object
Edit the template to contain %video_id% only.

And voila now the youtube shortcode should return a video id.

Now keep in mind that this template also powers the %video_embed% token within the ‘Videos’ module. So if you are using the Videos module be prepared for the %video_embed% token to return the video id instead of the object embed code.

Thunderbird Message Filters – Sort messages by body with Google’s IMAP.gmail.com

So I recently bought a new computer and had to transfer my thunderbird settings from one computer to another. I used MozBackup to copy the account settings and folder structures, but the custom filters did not transfer over. Turns out there is a plugin extension that allows us to import/export custom filters here , but the extension would not work with Thunderbird 7.0.1. So I just began re-creating the filters.

Turns out that the ‘body’ custom filter was was not available. This was terrible news. Thunderbird doesn’t have this feature setting because Thunderbird, when in imap mode, only reads the headers of the emails instead of the whole email when synchronizing

In order to restore the ‘body’ search option we need to set the mail account settings to store our emails on the hard disk.

Tools->Account Settings
Synchronization & Storage ->Advanced
Tick all the folders you would like to have advanced storage on (I tick all of my folders for every account. Best to have a record).
Now ‘body’ should appear!

HOW TO INSTALL

1. Extract all contents of this zip file onto your hard drive.

2. FTP into your blog’s ftp server using your favorite FTP program.

3. Once connected through FTP, navigate to the directory of your WordPress installation.

4. Refer to your BlogSense files which you extracted onto your hard drive, highlight the

following sub-directories and files listed below and upload them to your base WordPress

directory.

2. Now you are ready to begin using BlogSense. Open your browser and point it to this location:

/auto/index.php. This is how we will access the BlogSense Administration suite.

3. Once the BlogSense Administration Panel is open. Login using your wordpress administration

4. A cronjob needs to be set on the file heartbeat.php to power blogsense. The easiest way to

do this is download the BlogSense Connect plugin, which will automatically take care of this by

using WordPress’s pseudo cronjob system to power blogsense. This plugin is included in

BlogSense’s ‘my-plugins’ folder, but can also be downloaded from it’s location at wordpress’s

plugin direction here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/blogsense-connect/

REQUIREMENTS

1. allow_url_fopen must be enabled for PHP to save images and to have automatic

updates.

2. CURL must be enabled for the grabbing of content from external locations.

3. PHP5 (PHP4 will give issues).

4. Any NON IE browser. Internet Explorer is a bad apple and too costly to stay compabible

with. So any non-IE browser will work.

5. Sometimes if a web-host does not have suPHP installed then problems will occur with

automatic updating.

6. mb_detect_encoding must be enabled for BlogSense to behave well with foreign

languages.

7. To find out information about your PHP settings open /auto/phpin.php in your browser.

HOW TO USE – THE BASICS

Use your wordpress administration username and password to log into blogsense.

Activation / Setup

Please enter in your BlogSense License # and the License Email given to you with your original

software package and press install. If all is well this should take care of BlogSense Activation. If

you have purchased a single-site license and registered a domain-url instead of a email address,

please use the paypal email address you purchased BlogSense with.

Uninstallation

Once installed, uninstallation is as easy as pushing a button. Please note that once uninstalled,

for any reasons, all campaign data and BlogSense settings will be removed. If something goes

wrong during a software upgrade and it appears that BlogSense has uninstalled itself, do not

believe it! Contact administration for help in restoring BlogSense.

Learning Curves

BlogSense is fairly large with many modules, each having it’s own feel to it. It’s recommended

that you practice your automation techniques on a testblog before you attempt to place

BlogSense on a live blog.

features is not provided, this is because of the fiercely dynamic nature of BlogSense and also

All BlogSense installations are hard wired to the BlogSense community forum, which is a great

place for learning. If you are experiencing troubles with software operation, a troubleshooting

Import Vimeo RSS into WordPress Blog with BlogSense

Recently BlogSense added support for Vimeo RSS. Vimeo’s RSS feed doesn’t naturally provide the embedded content in their RSS feeds, but they do provide information on the artist and a screenshot of the video. Google’s RSS Reader automatically builds the video… and this type of functionality was definitely possible with BlogSense.

A simple vimeo rss detection filter was added that automatically builds an embed out of the video link and adds it to the top of the RSS content. The results are not too bad, but not well formatted either. To make it perfect we have to do some trickery with BlogSense’s search and replace feature and theme CSS editing.

Add this now to your style.css template file:

float:right;

}

This will cause the thumbnail of the video to float to the right of the extra content that sits right under the video.
